Love Me Do was one of four songs part-recorded on the day, but an unhappy Martin requested a session drummer to complete the song. It was the final straw for John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, who had been at odds with Best since their return from Hamburg, and they asked The Beatles′ manager, Brian Epstein, to fire him.
Love Me Do was written four years prior in 1958 by a 16-year-old McCartney, after skipping class at Liverpool Institute. McCartney had known Lennon for over a year at the time and played the song to the guitarist, who subsequently added the middle eight.
